Electric motorcycles are no longer a niche segment; they are rapidly becoming one of the key growth drivers of the global two-wheeler industry.

According to the latest report by MotorCycles Data, global electric motorcycle sales reached approximately 2.3 million units in the first four months of 2026, marking a 16.1% year-on-year increase. This represents the highest sales volume ever recorded for this period, highlighting the strong momentum of the global electric two-wheeler market.

Industry experts note that, beyond the ongoing shift toward greener transportation, fluctuations in fuel prices have also encouraged consumers to transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles to electric alternatives. In addition, many countries continue to maintain or expand supportive policies for electric mobility, ranging from tax incentives to investments in charging infrastructure.

China remains the world’s largest electric motorcycle market, accounting for 66% of total global sales. After a prolonged period of decline in previous years, the Chinese market began to recover significantly in 2025 and has continued its growth trajectory into 2026. Beyond consolidating their domestic position, Chinese manufacturers are increasingly pursuing international expansion strategies to capture new growth opportunities.

India ranks second globally, holding approximately 15.8% market share. Despite adjustments to certain EV incentive programs, the country still recorded a robust 29.7% growth in electric motorcycle sales during the first four months of the year. This growth has been primarily driven by domestic manufacturers such as TVS Motor, amid rising consumer awareness of operating costs and sustainable mobility solutions.

Notably, Vietnam is emerging as one of the brightest growth markets in the global electric motorcycle industry. According to MotorCycles Data, Vietnam ranked third worldwide in market size during the first four months of 2026 and is among the fastest-growing markets globally, with sales surging by 112.6% year-on-year.

This rapid expansion is closely tied to the accelerating electrification of personal transportation in Vietnam. Local authorities are actively exploring or implementing emission reduction initiatives, while consumers are increasingly prioritizing cost efficiency and environmental considerations. MotorCycles Data reports that total motorcycle sales in Vietnam reached approximately 1.28 million units in the first four months of the year, up 23.3%, with the electric segment contributing significantly to overall market growth.

Among manufacturers operating in Vietnam, VinFast is widely regarded as a key driver of the transition toward electric motorcycles. The company currently holds the largest market share in the domestic electric motorcycle segment and has been ranked among the world’s top 10 electric two-wheeler manufacturers by MotorCycles Data. In March 2026 alone, VinFast recorded more than 135,000 electric motorcycle orders and delivered over 93,000 units to its nationwide dealer network.

Beyond Vietnam, several emerging markets are also witnessing strong growth in electric motorcycles. Turkey is currently the fourth-largest market globally. After expanding by 27.5% in 2025, electric motorcycle sales in the country grew by an additional 2% in the first four months of 2026. Pakistan has climbed to fifth place worldwide, with sales increasing by 191.7% as of April 2026, driven by government incentives and rising fuel prices.

In addition to sales growth, the global electric two-wheeler fleet is expanding rapidly. According to MotorCycles Data, there are now over 80 million electric motorcycles in operation worldwide, accounting for approximately 8.8% of total motorcycles deployed over the past decade. This underscores the accelerating pace of electrification in the two-wheeler industry, which is expected to continue gaining momentum in the coming years.

With triple-digit growth rates, Vietnam is not only one of the most dynamic electric motorcycle markets globally but is also becoming a critical node in Southeast Asia’s green mobility transition. If current trends persist, Vietnam is well-positioned to strengthen its standing among the world’s leading countries in the development and adoption of electric motorcycles in the years ahead.
