Vietnam GDP by province

SUMMARY

Vietnam’s Gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021 preliminarily increased by 2.56%, which was the lowest annual growth rate in the period 2011-20211. The Covid-19 pandemic had seriously affected all socio-economic aspects, especially in the third Quarter in 2021 when many key economic provinces applied prolonged social distancing measures to prevent the pandemic. The result of positive GDP growth was a great success of Viet Nam in controlling and preventing the pandemic and maintaining the activities of business production. In the overall growth of the whole economy, the agriculture, forestry and fishery sector increased by 3.27%, contributing 15.7% to the growth rate of total value added; the industry and construction sector rose by 3.58%, contributing 55.6%; the service sector went up 1.57%, contributing 28.7%.

In 2021, the size of the economy at current prices preliminarily reached 8,479.7 trillion VND; GDP per capita attained 86.1 million VND, equivalent to 3,717 USD, an increase of 165 USD compared to that in 2020. In terms of 2021 economic structure, the agriculture, forestry and forestry sector, the industry and construction sector, the service sector, and the taxes less subsidies on products accounted for 12.56%, 37.48%, 41.21%, and 8.75%, respectively (the corresponding figures in 2020 were 12.66%; 36.74%; 41.83%; and 8.77%).

In the context of complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, the manufacturing was still the driving force of economic growth in 2021 with a contribution of 1.51 percentage points to the growth rate of total value added of the whole economy. In addition, due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, some market service activities experienced a low increase or a sharp decrease in comparison to that in the last year. The contributions of these market service activities to the total added value growth in 2021 were as follows: the wholesale and retail trade increased by 0.5% over the previous year, contributing 0.05 percentage points; the transportation and storage decreased by 3.11%, contributing to a reduction of 0.19 percentage points; the accommodation and food service fell by 20.21%, contributing to a decline of 0.5 percentage points of the overall growth. Particularly, the financial, banking and insurance expanded by 9.5%, contributing 0.52 percentage points.

In terms of GDP expenditure in 2021, the final expenditure increased by 2.33% compared to that in 2020; the gross capital formation rose by 3.96%; the export of goods and services expanded by 13.85%; and the import of goods and services rose by 15.83%. Due to the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnamese Government concentrated resources to control the pandemic in order to protect people's health, ensure social security, maintain and restore business production activities; the Government’s final expenditure recorded a year-on-year preliminary increase of 4.66%. Given the overall difficulties of the economy, the personal income decreased significantly, household’s final expenditure only preliminarily increased by 1.95%, higher than the growth rate of 0.38% in 2020 but much lower than figures in the period of 2011 - 2019.
