SUMMARY
Exports of the whole seafood industry in Q2 improved significantly compared to Q1, thanks to the recovery of some markets and abundant domestic raw material supply. In addition, the gross profit margin of export processing activities improved thanks to lower raw material prices while the average export price in Q2 was higher than in Q1. However, compared with the same period last year, the export value of the whole industry is still only 73%.
The improvement in Q2 was mainly driven by the export value of shrimp. Compared to the previous quarter, shrimp exports to most markets increased (especially the US and China, except the EU did not have much improvement). For pangasius, contrary to expectations at the beginning of the year, pangasius recovered slowly compared to other commodities. Pangasius export value in Q2 only increased by 6.8% compared to the previous quarter and still decreased by nearly 42% over the same period.
Seafood exports are forecasted to recover gradually, and the second half of the year will be more positive than the beginning of the year, but a sudden breakthrough is unlikely.
