SUMMARY
 
Harvested seafood output of the whole industry (both fishing & farming) in Q1 increased slightly by 1.4% compared to the same period last year (reaching 1.89 million tons), but decreased sharply compared to the previous quarter (down by 22.1%). Seafood exports in Q1 continued to decline for the third consecutive quarter as both demand and prices fell. Total seafood exports reached US$1.83 billion, down 24.9% from the previous quarter and down 27.3% from last year.
 
Besides weak demand, seafood processing enterprises also face difficulties when export prices continue to fall, but raw fish/shrimp costs remain high. Seafood exports are expected to improve in Q2/2023, but the recovery may be slow. The main recovery driver of the industry is still expected from pangasius.
