The agricultural sector is projected to have a trade surplus of USD 8.5 billion in 2022

In 2022, Vietnam's agricultural product consumption market is expected to continue expanding, with a focus not only on the domestic market but also on removing many trade barriers to help exports reach new records.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the export turnover for the entire agricultural sector in 2022 is over $53.22 billion, an increase of 9.3% compared to 2021. The trade surplus for the entire industry is estimated to be $8.5 billion, a 30% increase compared to 2021.

While main agricultural products reached $22.59 billion, an increase of 4.8%, main forest products reached $16.93 billion, an increase of 6.1%, seafood reached $10.92 billion, an increase of 22.9%, and livestock reached $400 million, a decrease of 7.1%.

In 2022, there will continue to be 11 groups of products with export turnover of over $1 billion, of which there are 8 products/product groups with a turnover of over $2 billion (coffee, rubber, rice, vegetables, cashew, shrimp, pangasius, wood products), including 7 items with a turnover of over $3 billion.

In 2022, the agricultural production value in Vietnam increased by 3.33% (cultivation 2.88%, livestock 5.93%, fisheries 4.43%, forestry 6.13%), and the added value of the entire agricultural sector is expected to increase by over 3%. The forest coverage rate is 42.02%, and the percentage of communes meeting new rural standards is over 73%.

Increasing the number of official channels for exporting a variety of agricultural goods

In order to achieve growth in the industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has closely coordinated with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to implement trade promotion mechanisms and policies, open negotiations, and develop markets to promptly solve problems and promote the export of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products. This includes responding to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict that disrupted the global supply chain of agricultural products, as well as actively researching, forecasting, and taking advantage of opportunities from free trade agreements to promote agricultural product exports.

In 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development negotiated and completed the procedures for exporting mango and chicken meat to Korea, pomelo and lemongrass to New Zealand, feathers, oats and oats products, milk and dairy products, durian, sweet potatoes, and honey to the EU. They also surveyed the planting area and the factory for irradiated fresh pomelo, which is now the seventh fruit from Vietnam allowed to be imported into the US market.

This was achieved through the long-term negotiation efforts of specialized agencies between the two sides and the persistent support of the Vietnamese pomelo producers and exporters community.
