New BOT Thermal Power Plant inaugurated in Thanh Hoa

On the afternoon of August 28 at the Nghi Son Economic Zone in northern Thanh Hoa province, the provincial People's Committee and the Nghi Son 2 Power Company Limited inaugurated and put into commercial operations the Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant.


They started this plant in July 2018 in Hai Ha commune, Nghi Son town (Thanh Hoa), with a total investment of nearly 2.8 billion USD, including 2 units with a total capacity of 1,200 MW. The Government assigned the project to Nghi Son 2 Electric Co., Ltd. as an investor. The general contractor for the project is Doosan Vietnam Heavy Industry Co., Ltd.


This is the second largest FDI project in Thanh Hoa province with a joint venture: KEPCO Electricity Corporation (Korea) with 50% capital contribution; Marubeni Group (Japan) contributes 40% and Tohuku Electric Company (Japan) contributes 10%. The project is invested as build - operate - transfer and will be handed over to Vietnam Electricity after 25 years.

Nghi Son 2 BOT thermal power plant is one of the very few coal-fired power plants in Vietnam that use supercritical technology with high efficiency, significantly reducing coal consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental problems. After officially put into operation, the plant will provide an additional 7.8 billion kWh of electricity annually to the national grid, meeting the electricity demand for production, business and people's needs of about 6 million families.


Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh affirmed that Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant results from good cooperation between the Government of Vietnam, the Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of Korea.


On behalf of the Government of Vietnam, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh would like to thank the Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of Korea for supporting, helping and creating favorable conditions for large economic groups to invest in Vietnam.


The Deputy Prime Minister believes that the friendship and cooperation relations between Vietnam, Japan and the Republic of Korea are always close and bring more success. At the same time, it is hoped that the Government of Japan and the Government of Korea will continue to pay attention to the project and promote cooperation in investment and trade with Vietnam in the coming time, especially in the energy industry.


In the coming time, in order to promote the achieved results and put the plant into production and business to ensure safety and efficiency, the Deputy Prime Minister proposed Nghi Son 2 Electricity Co., Ltd (Investor of Nghi Son 2 Thermal Power Plant), it is necessary to continue to pay attention to training and fostering staff to gradually master technological equipment; During production operation, it is necessary to fully comply with the regulatory process, ensure absolute safety for production, especially the safety of workers, as well as strictly control compliance with environmental standards under the law.


The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Electricity Group are interested in supporting, guiding and creating the most favorable conditions for investors in the process of production and business operation, ensuring the highest mobilization of the plant's capacity. In providing stable electricity for production and consumption, ensuring the overall economic efficiency of the economy and investors.


Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee directs all levels and branches to coordinate with Nghi Son 2 Electric Co., Ltd. to continue to pay attention to the lives and jobs of people in the project area, especially households that have handed over the premises to investment and construction of works; well implement the policy of career change, ensure sustainable livelihoods, improve the people's material and spiritual life, and ensure social security in the locality. In the process of economic development, implementing the Party's policy, absolutely not exchanging the environment for economic growth.
