SUMMARY
In May 2023, the steel market continued to record positive signals in both production and consumption. Specifically, production output increased for the 4th month in a row. Export of the whole industry exceeded 1.1 million tons and was the highest level since October 2021 until now. Export prices in May 2023 increased by 20.8% compared to January, although still decreased by 24.5% over the same period in 2022. Domestic consumption was still weak and has not improved significantly.
Despite the above-mentioned improvements, businesses in the industry still face many difficulties: raw material prices are still in a downward cycle and unpredictable movements, so enterprises also face certain difficulties in inventory policies. Increasing competitive pressure from cheap steel imported from China. The import demand of some markets such as ASEAN is still not stable and the tendency of some countries to protect domestic production.
