[VI] BANKING INDUSTRY REPORT - Q1/2023

SUMMARY

The domestic economic situation continued to reveal many difficulties: Exports dropped sharply due to weak demand from the world market; leading to negative growth in the manufacturing sector, many businesses had to cut capacity, and working hours and lay off workers on a large scale. Real estate businesses are still in a state of liquidity stress; waiting for the project's legal problems to be resolved; and/or liquidating projects/assets, downsizing,...

In Q1/2023, banks continue to increase their equity and improve tier 1 capital. The increase in equity is still mainly from retained earnings of banks. On-balance sheet non-performing loans & NPL ratio continued to increase rapidly. Specifically, the total non-performing loans of 29 commercial banks increased by VND34 trillion (+20.6% Ytd) in Q1. According to Vietdata's estimate, if VAMC and SCB's non-performing loans is included, the NPL ratio of the whole system could be over 3.04%.
